Our Professional Staff

Jeffrey S. Kahn, Ph.D., C.G.P., D.A.B.P.S., Managing Director of Summit Psychological Services, is a Licensed Psychologist (#2656). He received his A.B. from Hunter College, his M.S. in School Psychology from St. John’s University, and his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from New York University. Dr. Kahn’s specialty areas include addictions counseling, couples/relationship therapy, group therapy, positive psychology, and general adult issues. Dr. Kahn is a Diplomate in Psychotherapy, holds a Certificate of Proficiency in the treatment of alcohol and other substance use disorders (including smoking cessation), and is a Certified Group Psychotherapist. He is also certified in Clinical Hypnosis and is a certified graduate of the Authentic Happiness Coaching Program in applied Positive Psychology. Dr. Kahn currently leads or co-leads several in-house groups, including an addictions recovery group and a general adult group. Dr. Kahn has done research and published on the assessment and creation of therapeutic treatment environments, and designed and founded one of the first private Partial Hospitalization Programs in the country. He has also written on the relationship between substance abuse and dependence and mood and anxiety disorders. He served for many years on the New Jersey Alcoholism Counselor Certification Board and is an Executive Board Member and a past President of the Society of Psychologists in Private Practice.

Alison Johnson, Psy.D., Director of Summit Psychological Services, is a Licensed Psychologist (#3292). She received her M.A. from Edinburgh University in the United Kingdom, and her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. Dr. Johnson’s specialty areas include eating disorders, addictions counseling, adolescent counseling, grief/loss issues, group therapy women’s issues, and general adult issues. She is also a certified QuitSmart smoking cessation counselor. Dr. Johnson was recently certified by the Equine Growth and Learning Association to practice Equine Psychotherapy (EAGALA 1). Dr. Johnson currently co-leads a number of in-house groups, including an addictions recovery group, an adolescent group, and time-limited self-esteem/ social skills training groups for children and pre-teens. Dr. Johnson also performs in-service trainings to schools, facilities, and agencies on many topics, including Adolescents, Children, Eating Disorders, Substance Abuse, Grief and Loss, and Depression.

James F. Weiss, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist (#4058). He received his B.A. from St. Vincent College, his M.A.Ed. from Wake Forest University, his M.Div. from Christ the King Seminary, and his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. Dr. Weiss has extensive experience working at college counseling centers, including Seton Hall University, the University of Georgia, Wake Forest University and Virginia Commonwealth University. He has had post-doctoral training in hypnosis. His specialty areas include young adult issues, career counseling, marital therapy, diversity issues, and spirituality and psychology. He currently leads an in-house group for Young Adults. Dr. Weiss has been published in the fields of transpersonal and humanistic psychology.

Sharon Feeney, Psy.D., Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist (#4001). She received her B.A. from Colgate University (high honors), her M.S. from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and both her Psy.D. and Ph.D. from Nova Southeastern University. She is an adjunct faculty member at Weill Cornell Medical School. Dr. Feeney has presented workshops at both National and International conferences. Her specialty areas include general adult issues, couples therapy, geriatric issues, anxiety disorders and PTSD. Dr. Feeney has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of trauma, anxiety, and medical psychology.

Paul Kesselman, Psy.D., is a Licensed Psychologist (#445300). He received his B.A. with honors form Rutgers, and both his M.A. and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Yeshiva University. Dr. Kesselman has a wide range of clinical experience in inpatient, day treatment, and outpatient settings. He is an Adjunct Professor of child psychology at Bergen College. He has published research on psychotherapeutic treatments of social anxiety disorder. His specialty areas include the treatment of anxiety and depression, children’s issues, psychological testing of all ages, and general adult issues. Dr. Kesselman co-leads an in-house children’s group.

David L. Hanft, M.A., C.G.P., L.P.C., is a Licensed Professional Counselor (#PC02388) and a Certified Group Psychotherapist. He received his B.A. from Drew University and his M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Montclair State University. Mr. Hanft has been a mental health counselor at Fair Oaks Hospital and was the Director of Adolescent Partial Hospitalization and Outpatient Services at American Day Treatment Center. His specialty areas include adolescent counseling, adolescent addictions counseling, family therapy, group therapy, school refusal issues, eating disorders, self-mutilation and general addictions counseling. Mr. Hanft co-leads an in-house adolescent group.

Stephanie Bourgeois, L.C.S.W. is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (#51951). She received her B.A. from Connecticut College (Phi Beta Kappa) and her M.S. from Columbia University School of Social Work. She has also attended the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health in NYC, where she completed the program in Couples and Family Therapy. Ms. Bourgeois worked as a child psychotherapist in the New York City school system, and has provided psychotherapy at the Brooklyn Center for Psychotherapy and the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services. She has also provided psychotherapy for survivors of domestic violence at Victim Services, Inc. She is also a member of the New Jersey Association of Women Therapists. Her specialty areas include adolescent counseling, children’s issues, play therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, women’s issues, and general adult issues. In addition, Ms. Bourgeois is currently training in the practice of sandplay therapy, and she is using this highly specialized technique with clients of all ages. Ms. Bourgeose is fluent in French.

Jeffrey M. Stone, Ph.D., B.C.D.A., is a Licensed Psychologist in the states of New Jersey (#2008) and New York (#8094), as well as a New York State Certified School Psychologist. He received his B.A. from C.C.N.Y., and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He also completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (Rusk Institute) at N.Y.U. Medical center, where he received advanced training in pediatric neuropsychology, cognitive remediation, and child psychotherapy. Dr. Stone specializes in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents. He has worked with children, adolescents and their families in many different settings. He has served as a consultant to various public and private schools, developing and fostering learning and social environments that are tailored to meet the needs of students with a wide range of emotional, behavioral, or intellectual challenges. He works closely with parents, teachers, physicians, and other health providers with the goal of fostering the development of the “whole child.” In addition to providing direct services to clients, Dr. Stone has been involved in training and supervising psychology interns and post-doctoral fellows privately, and as an adjunct faculty member at Fairleigh Dickenson University and Columbia University Teacher’s College. His workshops for parents and school staff have focused on psychoeducational and psychosocial issues involved in Learning Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, and childhood depression and anxiety.

Stacy R. Ullman, Psy.D. is a Licensed Psychologist in New Jersey (#4291) and in New York State (#015148). Dr. Ullman received her B.S. at Indiana University and her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the George Washington University in Washington DC. She has medical board appointments at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Center, and is an adjunct faculty member of the Kings County Hospital Center Clinical Psychology APA accredited Internship Program. Dr. Ullman is currently doing advanced training at the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Ullman has worked in a variety of clinical settings and specializes in work with children and adolescents, HIV/AIDS, Sexual identity issues, limit setting/parenting, depression and anxiety, loss and bereavement, and trauma issues.

Freda Hansburg, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist (NJ #3046, PA #PS-005798-L, NY #11649). She received her BA, magna cum laude, from Barnard College, her MSS from Bryn Mawr and Ph.D. from Temple University. She is certified in Psychiatric Rehabilitation. Dr. Hansburg practices individual, group, couple and family therapy with adults, as well as career counseling, executive coaching and training to groups and organizations on effective communication. Dr. Hansburg originated and directed a nationally recognized day treatment program at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, and, for many years, directed a consultation and training center based at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. She has been an Adjunct Professor in Adult and Organizational Development at Temple University. The author of several journal articles, Dr. Hansburg is co-author of the books, PeopleSmart (Silberman & Hansburg, 2000) and Working PeopleSmart (Silberman & Hansburg, 2004).

Terence Sullivan, LCSW received his Bachelors Degree from Columbia Univer-sity and his Masters Degree in Social Work from Hunter College. He also completed a three year post-graduate program at the James Masterson Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and is certified in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy of the Disorders of the Self; Mr. Sullivan has presented with Dr. Masterson at several conferences and been published in the Institute’s newsletter. Mr. Sullivan has a broad background in psycho-therapy including several years at the Payne Whitney Clinic in New York. Recently, he completed Level 2 training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocess-ing), a technique that has proven helpful in treating trauma. Mr. Sullivan’s specialties include treatment of personality and adjustment disorders, depression, and trauma. Mr. Sullivan works with individuals as well as couples.

Glenda M. Insabella, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist in New Jersey (#4524). SHe was previously licensed in Connecticut, where she lived and worked for 7 years, before returning home to New Jersey. She received her B.A. at Wesleyan University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. She did pre-doctoral and post doctoral fellowships at the Yale University School of Medicine and later became Co-Director of Psychology Training at a Yale satellite community mental health clinic in West Haven. Dr. Insabella has worked in a variety of clinical settings and specializes in work with children, adolescents and their families, couples therapy, group therapy, smoking cessation, coping skills, depression and anxiety, trauma issues, diabetes, and general adult issues. Dr. Insabella also performs in-service trainings for schools, clinics, and agencies on such topics as, Communication between Adolescents and Parents; Stress Management; Conflict Resolution; Depression and Anxiety in Children and Adolescents; and Preventing Professional Burnout. She has published on divorce and remarriage and the collaborative divorce process, as well as participated in research on the effectiveness of coping skills for managing diabetes with all ages.

Mary G. Martone, Psy.D. is a Licensed Psychologist in New Jersey (#4583). She received her BA from Stonehill College (Summa Cum Laude) and her MA and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Yeshiva University. Dr. Martone worked for several years as a Senior Psychologist at Jacobi Medical Center in Bronx, NY where she provided outpatient treatment to children, adolescents, and adults from diverse backgrounds and with a range of mental health problems. At Jacobi, Dr. Martone was actively involved in the Psychology Internship Training Program and coordinated the Psychological Testing Program. Dr. Martone has co-authored publications in the area of psychosocial issues related to cancer and HIV/AIDS and has presented in the area of HIV/AIDS. She has particular experience and interest in coping with medical illness, depression, loss, adjustment issues, and psychological testing. Dr. Martone works with children, adolescents, and adults

Marcie Handler, Ph.D., is a licensed Psychologist in the State of New York (#016876) and holds a permit to practice Psychology in the State of New Jersey (#063-727). She received her B.A. in Psychology (cum laude) from Brandeis University and her M.A. in Psychology from New York University, where she was awarded the honor of Master's Scholar. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. Having completed her predoctoral internship at Bellvue Hospital, she went on to complete a fellowship there as the Chief Psychology Intern, training and supervising undergraduates. Dr. Handler has treated a wide range of clinical issues and worked in a variety of settings, conducting individual and group therapy with children, adults, and families. Prior to joining SPS she helped to develop and implement an integrative family based pediatric obesity program at Bellvue Hospital. Dr. Handler has extensive research experience and has been involved in studies examining early mother-child interactions, social phobia, and adult weight loss programs. Her clinical interests include adult relationship issues, women's issues, group therapy, eating disorders, and obesity.

 Nicole Gali, Psy.D. is a licensed Psychologist in New Jersey (#4678) and New York (017972-1).  She received her B.A. in Psychology (magna cum laude) from Muhlenberg College and her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.  She has also completed the 2-year post-graduate program in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy of Adults at NYU Psychoanalytic Institute at NYU Medical Center.  Dr. Gali has worked in a variety of settings and her clinical interests include working with adolescents and adults, eating disorders, self-injury, trauma, depression and anxiety.  She co-leads an in-house eating disorder recovery group.  Dr. Gali is fluent in Spanish

Christopher B. Gates, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist in New Jersey (#4616) and Alabama (#1486). He received his B.A. from Muhlenberg College (Philosophy), his M.A. in Addictions Counseling from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and his Ph.D. from Seton Hall University. Dr. Gates is a commissioned officer in the United States Army who completed his internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and spent his active duty service commitment in the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, NY. During a one year combat deployment to Afghanistan and stateside he worked in a variety of specialized areas to include helping individuals cope with trauma, adjustment issues, anxiety, depression, smoking cessation, stress management, sleep disorders, as well as resilience training for aviation and special operations personnel. Dr. Gates provides in-service trainings and lectures nationwide in trauma and crisis management and has recently authored an article in the New Jersey Psychologist on his experience as a military psychologist. He has advanced training in Addictions Counseling, is a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress by the National Center for Crisis Management, is a Board Certified Disability Analyst and Fellow by the American Board of Disability Analysts, and is a certified Aeromedical Psychologist by the US Army School of Aviation Medicine. Dr. Gates continues his military service as a Captain in the Army Individual Ready Reserve and is currently Co-Chair of the American Psychological Association’s Task Force on the Psychological Needs of US Service Members and Their Families.

Debra Shapiro Gill, Ph.D. is a Licensed Psychologist (#4341). She received her B.A. from the University of Virginia (Phi Beta Kappa) and both her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in obesity and eating disorders at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Gill’s specialty areas include weight management, health-related behavior change, pre/post-bariatric surgery counseling, eating disorders, addictions, and couples/relationships/divorce. She has facilitated comprehensive programs for cardiac rehabilitation, chronic pain, gynecological health and smoking cessation in which she incorporates hypnosis and biofeedback to help clients manage stress and pain in healthy ways. Dr. Gill’s combination of expertise in fitness, nutrition, and psychology allows her to provide comprehensive behavioral and emotional assistance for clients, of all ages, looking to develop a healthier lifestyle, improved self-confidence, and a peaceful relationship with food and their body.

Maia J. Stone, L.C.S.W., C.G.P. is a licensed Clinical Social Worker (#53209). She received her M.S. from Columbia University School of Social Work. She also attended the New York University Psychoanalytic Institute and is certified in psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults. Ms. Stone has completed her training at Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society in group psychotherapy. She is a therapeutic consultant and facilitates parent psycho-education and support groups for a non-public school in the NYC area. Ms. Stone has provided psychotherapy to children and adolescents receiving special education services in the NYC area. Her specialty areas include children and adolescent issues, play therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with a strengths based approach, parent training, general adult issues, Asperger’s Syndrome, Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Learning Disorders, and Adoption Issues. Ms. Stone works with Children, Adolescents, and Adults with a wide range of psycho-social stressors and diagnoses

U. Ingrid Schirrholz, Dipl.-Psych., M.A., T.E.P., received her psychology degree from the University of Hamburg, Germany, and her M.A. in Expressive Therapies from Lesley College. She is a certified Trainer, Educator, and Practitioner in Psychodrama, Sociometry, and Group Psychotherapy. Ms. Schirrholz is a graduate of Pathwork, a program for personal and spiritual transformation, and she is currently training spiritual counselors in Vermont and California. Ms. Schirrholz is very experienced in all forms of expressive therapy, including art therapy, music therapy, movement therapy, and, especially psychodrama. Her specialty areas include post-traumatic stress disorder, addictions counseling, eating disorder counseling, anxiety issues, and general adult issues. Ms. Schirrholz is fluent in German.

Kerry A. Rasp, BA, MBSR, CU, received his B.A. in Sociology from Montclair State University. He completed his internship at John Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Clinic, University of Massachusettes Medical Center and graduated from Coach University. He has been practicing meditation for over ten years, primarily in the Buddhist Vipassana tradition. His teachers have included Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg and Jack Kornfield. He regularly trains and leads individuals, couples and groups in mindfulness meditation, mindful parenting and mindfulness based stress reduction. As a personal coach, he works with individuals who seek more meaning and fulfillment in life, especially small business owners, parents, young adults, caregivers and the chronically ill.
